It is the most ancient Buddhist monastery in Mongolia and was built in 1585 by Abtai Sain Khan. To built this monastery, stones from the adjacent ancient city of Karakorum were used for its construction. This beautiful monastery is surrounded by a wall that features 100 stupas.

    The monastery regally stands on an island between the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. It is located in one of the most picturesque locations and Dzong refers to the structure which is a blend of both fortress and monastery. In Bhutan, every district has a dzong which is joined by the arched wooden bridge and contains many valuable remnants from the yesteryears.
